Friday Night Summer Series 2008

Blog Entry2008 series, Event 1 at SibbertoftMay 6, '08 5:21 PM
by richard for everyone

Well Guy & Gals, its all about to kick off this Friday at the popular Avalanche venue & it looks like the weather is going to be kind for a change. I had a walk round the site a couple of weeks ago with Robin the site manager, & have a couple of changes to report. The good news is that over the winter the owners have had some landscaping done in order to satisfy some of the wishes of the 4x4 fraternity, which means that we may be able to make use of a little more ground in the quarry, and the finishing area has had the dip levelled out by the addition of a few hundred tons of material, which makes the return leg a littler easier. The bad news is that its topsoil, which obviously takes longer to drain than gravel, but even so, with the gravel underlayer, it shouldn't affect us unless its raining at the time. Unfortunately, the 4x4 vehicles have churned things up somewhat, in the quarry, so there will be a section of single-track when first entering the quarry area. If you haven't pre-entered, I would like to ask you to download an entry form from this site, complete it in advance & bring it with you on the night. It saves both you & the sign-on staff a lot of time. Remember its still early May, & the days are relatively short so any helpful action is welcome. A start time of 7:15pm is the aim, with racing time of 45 mins plus 1 lap. Youths will do 30 mins plus 1 lap. Sign-on will be in the white marquee in the middle of the complex (which I am reliably informed will have been made ready by then). Parking: - The area close to the complex main entrance has been cleared of the farm implements & old vehicles, & should house about 40 cars. Otherwise park as normal in the field next to the finish area. Please leave the weighbridge area next to the road completely clear, as a 4x4 group are booked in for Saturday, & some will be turning up on the Friday evening. They are aware we will be racing until 8:15, & have been aksed to waitup in the weighbridge area until we can let them get on to the course to de-camp & get their barbie going. See you all on Friday for a 1-hour blast of aerobic excecise. -Just what the doctor ordered, -spare lungs not obligatory, but if you have a pair, you are well advised to bring them with you. Regards, RB

Its the first round and as always will be chaos for signing on.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
Fill out an entry form and bring it with you on the night, up to 100 people filling in forms on the night and the issuing of your series number just won't work.
Please try and bring the correct entry fee with you as well, always helps.

Update: I have spent mast of the day there today, & The course is bone dry, except for the lower levels of the quarry. The wood-chip surface for the "Gemini" bikes has been turned over today, & now has the constituency of porridge. - Not to worry, we will re-design the course in that area to minimise the pain level for this the first event. The marquee is there, and just another safety note regarding the adjacent airfiield. The wind direction is from the east, & any aircraft taking off, will be doing so towards the Avalanche complex, so on your warm-up /recce lap before the race, please keep to the quad bike track & DO NOT venture up towards the start or wander out on to the undershoot field before being called there by the race marshall. This will be approx 10 mins before the actual start. See you all there tomorrow, have a good race. RB

Did our first race here last night and just wanted to say that it was excellent. All really enjoyed it, great course, good atmosphere and well arranged. A big thanks to those who put it on and we will definitely be doing the rest of the series.

Guys, Thanks very much for the encouraging comment, it takes a lot of preparatory & tidying-up work to make an MTB or Cyclo-Cross event possible & I would like to thank the 2 main helpers Steve Osborn & Dave Benson who both helped to mark out the course & tidy-up in the dark afterwards. Thanks also go the 4 marshals who were there to help sort problems on the night, & the ladies, whose invaluable assistance helped prevent delays at the signing-on point. Lets not forget Neil, of course, who manned the pc out there in the fresh air working his fingers at speeds which a concert painist would be proud of.
With just a paper version of the lap-scoring sheets, I have produced a provisional result for the main placings in each category. -Don't take this as a final result, that will be produced later from the spreadsheet version, but for the meantime, I think this one is accurate. - I have filled in as much detail as poss. using data from entry forms filled in on the night. If you have pre-entered, & are in these results, I apologise in advance for not including your name detail. It's because I don't have that information with me at the moment. With approx. 120 riders on a 7-minute lap, the lap scoring was absolutely hectic, so I hope you don't mind waiting a little longer for the full result to be published. The racing was absolutely brilliant, & for me the most impressive rides were done by the top 3 Juniors who all finished on the same lap as the winner of the senior event, Ryan Henry. -With the likelihood of there being similar numbers over the rest of the season, perhaps running Juniors with Seniors is the best way to split the 2 groups. -It gives the youngsters a chance to be really stretched & to display their talent. I hope this first event has given you all encouragement to continue racing througout the coming season, & I look forward to seeing you at future events.
Regards, RB

- I'll go round with the wood magnet next time, - or better still, one of those sticky rollers made by Betterware or similar, which you use to remove cat/dog hairs from your best suit. -Shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks. - On the subject of punctures, At the end of a "recovery" ride this morning I pulled up at traffic lights about a mile from home & when I set off again, the front tyre was absolutely flat. -No warning, no hiss, no bang. How bizarre is that?
